Scotmid has survived the onslaught of thesupermarket titans by choosing to concentrate onserving its community-based market, as it hassince its inception 146 years ago. It has beenhard work, but Scotmid, which can count actor SirSean Connery amongst its past employees, hasevolved with the times and over the past fewyears has put substantial investment into thebusiness. In 2002, for instance, it spent £11.3million, the majority of which went onimprovements in stock control and ordering.Continued investment, including £12 million in2003, underline Scotmids re-emergence in whatis a fiercely competitive marketplace. Having been particularly successful with itsinvestment in technology - with some realbenefits coming through in terms of theavailability of stock within stores - Scotmid hascontinued to grow, both organically and through acquisition.
