Pickles and Potter Deli in Leeds have announced the winners of their sandwich design competition. Judging took place by Chef and owner of Pickles and Potter, Lorna Potter, who selected two winning sandwiches. The winning entries were a vegetarian option created by a team of three, Helen Barrett, Lucy Wiggins and Jay Gavan and non vegetarian option created by Mr A Mercer.
Pickles and Potter and Yorkshire Cancer Research have joined together to promote the importance of healthy eating to celebrate British Sandwich Week. The public were given a chance to invent a new healthy sandwich and see their creation on sale from May 8th until 7th June in both delis located at the Queens Arcade in Leeds City Centre and on Otley Road in Headingley. A percentage from the sale of each winning sandwich will be donated to Yorkshire Cancer Research.
The winning design for the non vegetarian option was a hand-made demi baguette filled with rare roast beef, homemade olive tapenade, roast tomato and balsamic relish, salad created by Mr A Mercer.
The winning vegetarian sandwich was a tasty idea suggested by Helen Barrett, Lucy Wiggins and Jay Gavan, the hand-made demi baguette filled with a home made spiced carrot and sweet potato relish, crumbly Wensleydale cheese and salad is now on sale in Pickles and Potter Deli’s.
The healthy eating mascot for Pickles and Potter, Mr Carrot, will be on the streets of Leeds on Saturday 16th May to let everyone know about the winning sandwiches and the importance of eating healthy local produce. The competition winners will see their sandwich on sale and receive a goody bag, including a voucher for themselves to dine at the Pickles and Potter Deli and a selection of homemade pickles and jams.
Lorna Potter, chef and owner of Pickles and Potter Commented: “The competition was a great success, there are a lot of creative people out there! We had some really tasty ideas and some very bizarre ideas, for example one entry was a Marmite and crisp sandwich. The winning sandwiches stood out because of the wonderful mix of healthy local produce and tasty flavours”.
She added: “Eating the freshest local food you can find is a great way to stay healthy and treat your body in the best possible way. We will donate 25 pence from the sale of each winning sandwich to Yorkshire Cancer Research- That really adds to the feel good factor of our food!!”
Yorkshire Cancer Research is an independent charity that relies on supporters to help raise funds. Funding is awarded to universities and their associated teaching hospitals across Yorkshire, to research the causes and cures of a variety of cancers.
Head of Communications for Yorkshire Cancer Research, Linsey Coulthard commented: “We are delighted to be teaming up with Pickles and Potter Deli to mark British Sandwich Week. A balanced diet is extremely important in order to maintain a healthy body and mind. We are trying to show that opting for a healthy diet can also be lots of fun”.
She added: “The money raised from the sale of the winning sandwiches will enable us to continue our fight to combat cancer”.
